With more and more brands realising the importance of having a strong website and robust social media strategy after the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever for SMEs and brands to bring their A-Game to the digital arena. This means being well up on both on-page and off-page SEO, because a huge part of your success comes down to how you implement these.

First off, not many business owners or entrepreneurs are aware that SEO has two parts (unless they have a digital marketing background). In our journey as content writing and SEO experts, we ourselves have been asked this question by many of our clients.

That’s why we have decided to focus more in detail on these two aspects in our coming blogs. First, let us take up the essential on-page SEO checklist. This is a simple set of 3 crucial factors you MUST implement on your website to improve your search rankings.

First, let us look at…

What is On-page SEO?

Like the name suggests, this refers to everything you do on your web pages. The goal of on-page SEO is to improve your ranking position on the Google search results page. Whenever you design your website or even modify it, it is crucial that you do not forget to update your SEO.

The essential on-page SEO checklist

Did you know that Google tracks more than 200 factors in order to rank websites?1 It’s impossible to keep track of them all, but there are 3 key factors you should consider.

1. Keywords

Optimising your website content with relevant short and long-tail keywords is one of the most fundamental steps towards getting on-page SEO right. Keyword trends are constantly changing, and so you may need to keep revamping your website content to target the most relevant keywords your audience is searching for.

Ask yourself: Do I know which keywords my audience is searching for right now? And are these keywords present in my website copy?

2. Title tag and meta description

These are two elements you need to add to each web page on your website because this is what every user sees when they find you online on a search results page. If these are not available, Google will have a problem indexing the content of that page. These are also great areas to add more relevant keywords to, thus increasing the chances that you will be found online.

Ask yourself: Does each page on my website have a customised title tag and meta description?

3. Internal linking

Internal linking is yet another very important factor when it comes to improving your rankings. What does this mean? It just means that the relevant pages on your website are all internally linked to each other – for example, you could have an internal link on a blog leading the reader to another page on your own website. That’s an internal link. This blog itself has 2 internal links in the last paragraphs – see if you can spot them!

Ask yourself: Do I have enough internal links on my website?

If you answered YES to all 3 questions above, good job! Your on-page SEO is off to a good start!
